We did a quick experiment in our office at Citrix this week – we 3D printed a prototype of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+. There’s obviously been a ton of buzz about these new devices and many of our team members have been on the fence about which size to purchase. We had done some paper prototypes on announcement day, but these 3D prototypes add a physical element that really makes you think twice about the giant 6+. We used quick models found on Thingiverse and printed them on our MakerBot Replicator (5th Gen). The two models printed together and took around 5 hours (with rafts).

As you can see from these quick photos, both phones are significantly larger than the current 5/5S models, but the 6+ is a behemoth comparatively. For example, I’m 6’2” and the 6+ even looks large in MY hands.

This was a fun experiment in making a rapid prototype in order to make a best decision before full investment – something we’re doing more and more at Citrix for our customers. Will be interesting to see how these two new devices change the way we use our phones (and software) day-to-day.
